History of Nowshera, Pakistan
Nowshera, the capital of Mardan is a district situated in the Punjab province of Pakistan. The city is located on the banks of the Swat River and lies on a plateau on the lower slopes of the Himalayan range.
The city is located about 200 km north of Islamabad and 140 km south of Peshawar. The Nowshera area is known for its apple orchards and its historical importance as an administrative center.
Nowshera was founded by Ahmad Shah Durrani in 1826 and remained his residence for the first three years of his reign.
During the 1829-1831 war between the Sikhs and the Durrani Empire, a Sikh army under Ranjit Singh invaded and conquered much of the area. The Sikh forces were defeated by Muhammad Ali Khan and his father Khawaja Azeem Khan in the Battle of Nowshera in 1834.
In 1846 the British government took control of the province of Nowshera, which was situated in the British garrison town of Mardan.
The new administrative capital of the province of the Mardan was moved to Mardan from Nowshera, after the Anglo-Sikh Wars of the 1860s.
In 1864, Muhammad Akbar Khan established the Mardan division of the Frontier Province. During the First World War, Nowshera was occupied by British forces.
In the early 1920s, the Nowshera subdivision, and Nowshera itself, was made into a separate subdivision.
